More About Avoriaz

Discover Avoriaz: The French Alps at Their Finest

Perched high in the Portes du Soleil ski area, Avoriaz is one of the French Alps’ most striking resorts—car-free, ski-in/ski-out, and surrounded by dramatic peaks that deliver in every season. Whether you‘re chasing fresh powder in winter or mountain air in summer, Avoriaz blends natural beauty with modern comfort in a way few Alpine resorts can match.

In winter, the resort opens up over 600km of linked pistes, catering to every level. Confident skiers and snowboarders can drop straight into challenging reds and powder-filled off-piste, while beginners have dedicated nursery slopes and gentle blues right outside the door. There are several excellent ski schools, too, so it’s a solid choice for families or anyone looking to build confidence on the snow.

Come summer, the slopes give way to hiking trails, mountain biking routes, and panoramic views. There's horse riding, paragliding and even an aquatic centre with indoor and outdoor pools for more relaxed days.

Accommodation in Avoriaz ranges from stylish self-catered apartments to luxury residences with spa facilities and private terraces. Dining options are varied, from high-altitude restaurants with traditional Savoyard fare to laid-back brasseries in the heart of town.

Avoriaz’s unique charm lies in how easy it makes everything. You can ski to the door, walk to dinner, and still feel deep in the mountains. It’s a place that manages to feel both exclusive and welcoming, and ideal for couples, families, and groups who want more from their Alpine escape.

Key Highlights

Skiing & Snowboarding Ability Ratings – Avoriaz

Beginners – ★★★★☆ (4/5) Avoriaz is a solid choice for beginners. Wide nursery slopes are located right in the resort, and the gentle blue and green runs are easily accessible. The ski schools are highly rated and well set up for both children and adults. The car-free environment also helps beginners feel more at ease.

Intermediates – ★★★★★ (5/5) Perfect for confident skiers who want variety. Avoriaz sits in the heart of the Portes du Soleil, offering direct access to an enormous network of blue and red runs. There’s plenty of terrain to explore without needing to tackle anything too steep, making it ideal for building technique and covering serious ground.

Advanced – ★★★★☆ (4/5) While the immediate Avoriaz area has a few challenging blacks, the real appeal for advanced skiers is the access to the broader Portes du Soleil. There’s some excellent off-piste and ungroomed terrain, especially around the Hauts Forts and Chavanette—the famous “Swiss Wall.” It’s not quite as extreme or steep as some other high-Alpine resorts, but it offers more than enough for advanced skiers looking for variety and challenge.

Snowboarders – ★★★★★ (5/5) Avoriaz is one of the most snowboard-friendly resorts in the Alps. The terrain is naturally suited to snowboarding, with wide pistes, fewer flat areas than many resorts, and excellent powder zones. It’s also home to The Stash, an eco-friendly, freestyle snowpark built by Burton—one of the best of its kind in Europe. There are multiple parks, a superpipe, and plenty of freeride terrain, making it a standout for riders of all levels.
