Why the Galápagos Should Be at the Top of Your Bucket List

Why the Galápagos Should Be at the Top of Your Bucket List

Some trips are memorable. Others completely blow your expectations out of the water.

The Galápagos Islands had been sitting right at the top of my bucket list for years, and after finally experiencing them for myself, I can honestly say they exceeded every expectation I had. It wasn‘t just a holiday; it was one of those life-changing adventures that stays with you forever.

From the moment I arrived, it felt like I‘d stepped into my own wildlife documentary. Sea lions wandered happily around the beaches and towns as if they owned the place (to be fair, they probably do!), blue-footed boobies performed their famous courtship dance, giant tortoises ambled through the highlands, marine iguanas basked on volcanic rocks, penguins darted through the water, and every snorkelling trip brought another "wow" moment. Sharks, sea turtles, eagle rays and playful sea lions swam so close that my GoPro went into overdrive.

What makes the Galápagos so special isn't just the wildlife; it's how completely unafraid the animals are. There's no chasing or searching for hours. They simply carry on with their lives while you're lucky enough to witness it. It's conservation at its very best, and it's impossible not to come away with a huge appreciation for this extraordinary corner of the world.

I was fortunate enough to explore the islands on board the National Geographic-Lindblad Islander II, and I genuinely couldn't imagine a better way to experience the Galápagos. More luxury yacht than cruise ship, with just 48 guests, it offered the perfect balance of comfort, adventure and expert guidance. Every day brought a new island, new wildlife encounters and new activities, from Zodiac cruises and guided hikes to snorkelling alongside some of the most incredible marine life I've ever seen.

One of the things I loved most was that no two days were the same. Sunrise Zodiac rides, afternoons on powder-soft white sand beaches, volcanic landscapes that looked like another planet, kayaking, paddleboarding and evenings sharing stories with fellow travellers after another unforgettable day.

If you've never considered expedition cruising before, don't let the word "expedition" put you off. Yes, it's adventurous, but it's also incredibly comfortable, well organised and suitable for anyone with a sense of curiosity. You don't need to be an experienced cruiser or wildlife expert to enjoy it, just someone who wants to experience one of the most remarkable destinations on Earth.

I've travelled to some amazing places over the years, but the Galápagos have earned a place right at the top of my favourites. It's one of those destinations that changes the way you see the natural world.

If the Galápagos is on your bucket list or even if it wasn't until now, I'd love to help make it happen. Whether you're wondering if expedition cruising is for you or want to know the best itinerary, ship or time to visit, let's have a chat.

Why I Loved Expedition Cruising

I'll admit, before this trip I wasn't quite sure what to expect from an expedition cruise.

If the word "expedition" makes you think of roughing it, think again!

The National Geographic-Lindblad Islander II feels much more like a luxury yacht than a traditional cruise ship. With just 48 guests onboard, and 56 staff, the atmosphere is relaxed, personal and incredibly friendly. The crew quickly learn your name, the naturalists are unbelievably knowledgeable, and everything is designed to get you closer to the wildlife while travelling responsibly through this protected environment.

My Favourite Galápagos Moments

It's almost impossible to choose, but these will stay with me forever:

• Snorkelling with incredibly playful sea lions and serene sea turtles.

• Sunrise yoga on the beach

• Seeing the famous blue-footed boobies just metres away.

• Watching marine iguanas swim through the ocean.

• Visiting the famous Post Office Bay on Floreana Island.

• Standing on pristine white sand beaches with barely another person in sight, apart from a sealion colony

• Enjoying spectacular sunsets, cocktail in hand after another unforgettable day exploring.

Every island had its own personality, making each day feel like a brand-new adventure.

Is the Galápagos Worth It?

Without hesitation... absolutely.

Yes, it's a significant investment, but it's one of those trips you'll remember for the rest of your life. The Galápagos offer something you simply can't experience anywhere else.

If you love wildlife, photography, nature, adventure or just want to experience somewhere truly unique, this destination delivers in every possible way.

If the Galápagos have been sitting on your bucket list like it was on mine, I'd love to help make it happen.

Having experienced it first-hand, I can answer all those questions you probably have:

• Is expedition cruising right for me?

• Which ship should I choose?

• What's the best itinerary?

• When is the best time to visit?

• How active is it really?

• There's no substitute for first-hand experience, and I'd love to share mine to help you plan your own once-in-a-lifetime adventure.

If you're thinking about the Galápagos or you're simply curious about expedition cruising, let's have a chat. I have a feeling you'll fall in love with it just as much as I did.
