The Italian Lakes in the foothills of the Alps are outstandingly beautiful and have been the playground of the rich and famous for centuries. I thought id just chat a bit about Lake Maggiore and Lake Orta... From Lake Maggiore you can often see snow-capped mountains and of course there are the gorgeous Borromeo Islands in this area too. The lake enjoys a really mild climate which means that bright and unusual flowers and luxurious plants are in abundance during the summer months and the land around Lake Maggiore is often termed The Garden of Europe. The lake also has a magical quality, especially when its still and quiet at night, so put some time aside to enjoy an evening drink in one of the many bars and cafes around the lakeside. And just for the romantics out there....it is often written that the translucent quality of Lake Maggiore is due to the teardrops of unrequited lovers and romantic poets such as Byron, Shelley, and Ruskin. In contrast, Lake Orta, which is to the west of Lake Maggiore is much smaller than Lake Maggiore, exceedingly tranquil, and surrounded by mountains and luxurious vegetation.
