Chasing the Northern Lights: My Snowmobile Voyager Adventure in Finnish Lapland
In February 2025, I travelled with Transun on their three-night Snowmobile Voyager tour — and it was one of the most exhilarating and magical experiences of my life. From frozen waterfalls to Northern Lights safaris, lake plunges to reindeer farms, every moment was unforgettable.
Here’s a glimpse of the journey, day by day.
Day 1: Arrival & Welcome Evening
We flew into Enontekiö Airport (Enantico) and began our adventure with a 2.5-hour transfer north. About halfway, we stopped to get fitted with our thermal suits and boots — essential for keeping warm in the Arctic conditions.
Our base for the trip was the Tundrea Resort in Kilpisjärvi, a beautiful lakeside setting surrounded by snowy wilderness. We stayed in a spacious four-bedroom cabin, spotlessly clean and styled in a traditional Finnish design. With our own private sauna and a real log fire, it was the perfect retreat after each day’s adventures.
That evening, we enjoyed a hearty hot meal before heading to our welcome meeting with Transun. Held in a beautiful log cabin with a roaring fire, it felt more like a cosy gathering than a briefing. We toasted marshmallows while hearing all about the adventures ahead.
Day 2: Frozen Waterfall Hike, Lake Dip & Northern Lights Safari
After breakfast, we joined a guided hike to a frozen waterfall. Lasting about three hours, it was more of a trek than a stroll — but the payoff was worth it. The sight of the waterfall suspended in solid ice, surrounded by glistening snow, was simply magical.
In the afternoon, I braved the frozen lake dip at Tundrea. Lowering yourself into water beneath thick ice is one of the coldest experiences imaginable — but also one of the most invigorating. The rush of energy afterwards was incredible, and of course, warming up in the sauna back at our cabin was the perfect finish.
That evening, we geared up for one of the trip’s highlights: a Northern Lights snowmobile safari. Snowmobiling at night was utterly exhilarating — the hum of the engine, the crunch of snow beneath us, and the Arctic sky glittering with stars. And then came the Aurora Borealis: ribbons of green and purple light dancing across the horizon.
We paused at a remote wilderness hut to warm up with mugs of steaming hot blackcurrant juice (mehu) — a simple Finnish tradition that made the moment all the more special.
Day 3: The Three Borders Safari & Reindeer Farm Visit
The next morning, we set off on the Three Borders snowmobile safari — a thrilling 3.5-hour ride that took us across frozen lakes and snowy trails to the point where Finland, Sweden, and Norway meet. Standing at the marker felt surreal, and of course, we had fun running around the monument, crossing all three countries in less than a minute!
In the afternoon, we visited a traditional working reindeer farm. Meeting the reindeer and learning about the Sámi way of life gave us a deep appreciation for Lapland’s culture and traditions. Listening to stories around the fire while surrounded by these gentle animals was a truly moving experience.
That evening was free to spend at leisure — relaxing in our sauna or curling up by the log fire was the perfect way to end the day.
Day 4: Farewell to Lapland
After one final hearty breakfast at Tundrea, it was time to transfer back to Enontekiö Airport for our journey home. Saying goodbye to Lapland wasn’t easy, but we left with memories to last a lifetime.
Food & Accommodation
Meals throughout the trip were warming and freshly prepared — exactly what you need after a day in the snow. Think steaming soups, casseroles, and comforting Finnish specialities.
The Tundrea Resort was a highlight in itself. Our cabin was huge and beautifully kept, with plenty of space for our group. Having our own sauna was a luxury that made such a difference, and evenings by the log fire created the cosiest atmosphere after action-packed days in the snow.
Tips for Future Travellers
Layer up! Two pairs of gloves and three pairs of socks kept me warmer here (even in minus-20 temperatures) than I often am during winters at home.
Be ready for active days — snowmobiling and hiking make this a physically rewarding adventure.
Don’t skip the lake dip. It may sound daunting, but it’s one of the most refreshing and memorable experiences you’ll ever have.
Final Thoughts
The Snowmobile Voyager with Transun was seamless, thrilling, and absolutely magical. From the frozen lake plunge to snowmobiling under the Northern Lights, every moment was perfectly organised and completely unforgettable.
For anyone looking for a unique winter adventure in Lapland, this itinerary offers the perfect mix of action, culture, and comfort.
