Finding a destination that's a bit different and not too far away is always a challenge. I had always thought of Madeira as one of those more traditional destinations that appealed to the more mature market who wanted a getaway from it all. That was until I discovered the new modern in design very funky hotel that is The Vine in Madeira.
Situated in the centre of Funchal close to the 16th century cathedral, offering superb views out to see this little gem has so much to offer in terms of experience, location and some stunning views to boot. This is a luxury but moderate size boutique hotel with just over 50 rooms, 17 Junior Suites and 5 Suites. There are the ultra modern touches, the interior designer - a local - Nini Andrade Silva has embrace Madeira's most famous export - fortified wine and created a space that reflects so much the country's much loved famous tipple.
We particularly like the fact that this hotel, in addition to offering luxury accommodation has also invested time and effort in making access for all types of guests possible. There are specific rooms that are specially designed to make those guests with reduced mobility feel right at home.
Combine the stunning decor with amazing outdoor roof top pool and terrace, great places to eat - The Terra Lounge for breakfast and The Uva for lunch and dinner, a great 360 degree Sky and Roof Top Bar and you can't fail to enjoy you stay in Madeira's capital city! The hotel offers FREE underground parking, Wi-fi and the hotel's guest relations team will help you to organise excursions, book spa treatments and even to organise the odd golf lesson or round if golf is more your thing.
Once you have enjoyed your surroundings for a bit head out to explore the island's must do attractions and recommended places to visit. The Pico do Arieiro is a beauty spot that you can drive to and offers terrific views of the surrounding countryside - a visit here is ranked as the number one thing to do on Trip Advisor (check out the link below)!

The excitement doesn't stop there - visit the Botanical gardens and take a cable car ride and enjoy the amazing sights that the island has to offer. Visit Santa Maria Street with it's hand-painted doors and quaint cafes and gift shops (we all love a to take a few souvenir reminders back home - or is that just me?) If you prefer to explore why not head off for some whale and dolphin watching - the islands are famed for their abundant sea-life - even the local aquarium has got in on the act by offer introductory diving experiences - by far the best way to experience diving if you ask me.
The Cabo Girao Sky-walk is the second tallest sky-walk in the world after the Grand Canyon (I have visited that at over 1500 metres) Madeira's version at 589 metres is rather more appealing. There are gardens to explore, walks to be done and I nearly forgot the odd spot of shopping.
New Year is a big celebration in Madeira, fireworks and parties are the order of the day, so maybe a possibility for a post Christmas getaway. The Madeira Flower Festival happens between the 4th - 21 May 2017, or you could check out the Islands very own Carnival that is scheduled to take place in March. Other events include a June Vintage Car Raly, The Festa dos Santos Popolares (Festival of the popular Saints) - dedicated to three famous local saints there are bonfires, food stalls and decorated streets to explore. There is a jazz festival in July 2017 and so many more special events it's hard to pack them all in.
