Is Mykonos just for the Party Goers?

Is Mykonos just for the Party Goers?

Is Mykonos just for the partygoers?

That’s the question I asked myself when I was offered the chance to visit Mykonos for a short trip, exploring the island and a selection of its hotels. Boarding the plane, I did feel a little older (and possibly not as trendy) than the average traveller, but with my faithful Skechers on, I bounced happily to my seat. At the baggage carousel, I noticed a few more mature couples alongside me, and I began to realise this island might not be all about partying after all.

The trip was hosted by the Myconian Collection - a group of 14 hotels, all family-run, with the first opening back in 1979. The business is now operated by four sons, and that sense of family is clear in the personal service and attention to detail throughout their hotels. I visited all 14, each with its distinct personality: from boutique hotels close to Mykonos Town, to stylish beach properties and quiet hillside retreats.

As for the party scene?

Yes, it’s there if you want it. Paradise Beach is home to world-class DJ events and wild beach parties that last until sunrise. Super Paradise Beach has a more relaxed, inclusive vibe and is famous for its beach bars and festive energy. But it’s easy to steer clear of all that if it’s not your thing.

After dinner one evening, I wandered through the cobbled streets and boutique shops of Mykonos Town. As I headed back to my hotel, the nightlife was just starting to stir - but for me, a peaceful glass of wine with a view was the perfect way to end the day.

Beyond the buzz, the island has so much more to offer. While some beaches are busy in high season, there are quieter coves to be found if you venture a little further. And for pool lovers, every hotel I visited boasted stunning pools with sweeping views of the Aegean.

One thing that stood out? The food. Whether in the hotels or at local restaurants, the quality was exceptional. Many of the properties I visited have long-standing relationships with farmers and fishermen going back decades, and you could taste it in every dish.

Mykonos also offers a rich cultural experience. Little Venice is a picturesque district filled with colourful buildings, waterfront cafés and art galleries. Just a short walk away are the famous windmills of Kato Mili, a symbol of the island’s agricultural past.

One of the highlights of my trip was visiting Rizes Folklore Farmstead - a working farm where I joined a cooking class. We prepared tzatziki, Mykonian meatballs, and sweet ravioli, which we then enjoyed for lunch alongside other delicious Greek dishes. It was a lovely, grounding way to experience the island’s traditions.

Mykonos truly exceeded my expectations. Whether you’re keen to party into the early hours or prefer a relaxed dinner as the sun sets, it’s an island with something for everyone, and I’d go back in a heartbeat.
