Birthday Miles, Miami Heat & Resilient Lady Energy
Birthday Miles, Miami Heat & Resilient Lady Energy
Your blog already has loads of personality and warmth. It feels genuine, which is the hard part. I’ve tightened the structure, polished the flow, corrected grammar, and kept the humour sharp without making it sound overly corporate or like a travel brochure written by a robot in loafers.
Birthday Miles, Miami Heat & Resilient Lady Energy
There’s something slightly surreal about starting a birthday trip at Heathrow knowing the result involves Caribbean sunsets, rooftop cocktails, and becoming emotionally attached to a red hammock on a cruise ship. Yet here we are.
The trip began with a Virgin Atlantic flight from Heathrow to Miami and, from the moment we checked in, everything felt effortless. Upper Class lounge access, smooth security, speedy boarding. The kind of airport experience that almost makes you forget Heathrow usually feels like a competitive sport.
Then came the birthday surprise.
The flight itself was brilliant. Relaxed atmosphere, great food, excellent service and, naturally, my entirely reasonable birthday mission was to somehow end up in the cockpit after landing while wearing a head-to-toe red outfit. Miraculously, mission accomplished. Surrounded by flashing buttons and controls, it absolutely did not disappoint.
After a quick transfer, we checked into YOTEL Miami for our pre-cruise stay near the port.
The hotel was modern, sleek and perfectly located for embarkation day. Exactly what you want after a long-haul flight. Simple design, comfortable rooms and everything needed for a one-night stop before boarding.
But the real highlight came the following morning.
We were invited to breakfast on the rooftop by the General Manager, which instantly made us feel far more important than we actually are. The rooftop itself was stunning. Hot tubs bubbling away, palm trees swaying in the Miami breeze, a rooftop pool glowing in the sunshine and panoramic city views stretching in every direction.
Breakfast was equally impressive. Fresh pastries, incredible coffee, relaxed conversation and that first proper holiday feeling finally kicking in.
## Boarding Resilient Lady Like Rockstar Royalty
Then came embarkation day.
We had Rockstar VIP access, which meant priority boarding and early access onto the ship while everyone else queued patiently in the Florida heat. It was impossible not to feel at least slightly smug strolling straight on board.
First impressions of Resilient Lady were honestly incredible.
Virgin Voyages feels nothing like traditional cruising. It’s modern, stylish and effortlessly cool without trying too hard. Somewhere between a luxury hotel, beach club and floating adults-only playground.
Then I reached our Sea Terrace cabin.
And there it was. The famous red hammock.
Sitting on the balcony, it already knew it would become the star of the entire holiday. Morning coffees, afternoon naps, sunset cocktails. That hammock delivered emotional support at levels I simply wasn’t prepared for. Also, far sturdier than I initially gave it credit for after climbing in with all the grace of a falling giraffe.
Sail Away & The Wake
After unpacking, we explored the ship before heading to the sail-away party as Miami slowly disappeared behind us.
Music pumping. Drag queens dancing. Drinks flowing. Everyone is instantly in holiday mode.
The perfect start.
Dinner that evening was at The Wake, Virgin’s glamorous steak and seafood restaurant overlooking the aft of the ship. Elegant without being pretentious. Incredible food, beautiful ocean views and the perfect atmosphere for the first night onboard.
Day 2 – Sea Day & Ship Exploring
Our first full day onboard started early because excitement apparently replaces sleep on holiday. Add in the time difference, and I found myself in The Galley at 5 am searching for coffee and pastries like a sleep-deprived gremlin.
Then again, in at 9 am for a slightly more socially acceptable breakfast.
The Galley is Virgin’s answer to a buffet, except instead of wandering around balancing questionable scrambled eggs on a tray, everything is freshly prepared and served to you. It massively reduces food waste and somehow makes breakfast feel civilised instead of mildly competitive.
The rest of the day was spent properly exploring the ship. We were treated to a behind-the-scenes tour, had the chance to ask questions and took far too many photos… only to continue getting lost for the next two days anyway.
And honestly, there’s so much onboard.
Beautiful pool decks, hidden seating areas, stylish cocktail bars, a full gym overlooking the ocean, wellness spaces, live music venues, outdoor lounges, an old-fashioned arcade, luxury shopping, late-night entertainment and even a tattoo studio for anyone wanting a permanent souvenir after three margaritas. There’s also a casino, naturally designed to convince you that this next spin is absolutely the lucky one.
As Rockstar guests, Richard’s Rooftop quickly became one of our favourite spots onboard. A private adults-only rooftop retreat complete with hot tubs, daybeds and panoramic sea views. Every evening from 5 pm to 6 pmm, they hosted a complimentary happy hour which immediately became part of our routine. Purely for research purposes, obviously.
Dinner that evening was at Pink Agave, Virgin’s elevated Mexican restaurant packed with bold flavours, vibrant atmosphere and dangerously good cocktails before heading off to one of the incredible onboard shows.
Day 3 – Cocktails, Shows & Razzle Dazzle
By the second sea day, we had fully adapted to cruise life, although somehow still managed to walk the wrong direction every single time.
Coffee on the balcony. Ocean views. Hammock. Explore. Repeat.
Part of the day was spent at Test Kitchen,n taking part in a cocktail-making class which quickly descended into absolute chaos in the best possible way. Equal parts science lesson and accidental public experiment. The bartenders made it look effortless, while the rest of us produced drinks tasting vaguely of sweets and poor decisions.
Dinner that evening was at Razzle Dazzle, one of the boldest and most playful restaurants onboard. Bright interiors, incredible food and an atmosphere that perfectly sums up Virgin Voyages.
Another evening show followed, along with a group karaoke session in one of Virgin’s private booths. These need to be pre-booked, so add your name to the board early and prepare to unleash your inner Dolly Parton.
Day 4 – Ocho Rios, Jamaica
Day four brought us to Ocho Rios, Jamaica, and the scenery instantly looked like a postcard.
Our excursion for the day was river tubing and waterfall jumping at the Blue Hole.
Floating through tropical jungle rivers surrounded by rainforest was incredible. Relaxing one minute, mildly chaotic the next,t depending on who crashed into who first.
Then came the waterfalls.
Climbing, swimming and jumping into bright blue pools while locals casually encouraged everyone to leap from increasingly higher rocks. One of those excursions where you spend the entire time laughing while also quietly questioning your own decision-making skills.
The Blue Hole itself was stunning. Crystal-clear water, hidden waterfalls and scenery that barely looked real.
Back onboard, we naturally returned straight to rooftop cocktails and luxury dining as though none of us had just launched ourselves off cliffs a few hours earlier.
Dinner that evening was at Extra Virgin, followed by a very necessary early night.
Day 5 – Grand Cayman & Scarlet Night Chaos
Arriving in George Town, Grand Cayman, felt like stepping into a screensaver.
The water was impossibly turquoise.
We boarded a catamaran bound for Stingray City with Caribbean music playing, sunshine blazing and ocean views in every direction.
Unfortunately, the weather conditions meant the stingray experience couldn’t go ahead safely, so instead we visited Starfish Point,t where we spent time relaxing on the beach and spotting giant starfish resting across the seabed.
Honestly, not a bad backup plan.
Back on board, we headed once again to Richard’s Rooftop happy hour before dinner at Gunbae, Virgin’s Korean BBQ restaurant, where the group drinking games destroyed everyone’s dignity in record time.
That evening was Scarlet Night.
Virgin’s iconic onboard celebration,n where the entire ship transforms into one giant immersive party. Everyone dressed in red while performers, music and entertainment appeared around every corner. We were told the story behind Scarlet Night, cocktails flowed endlessly, and the dancing genuinely never seemed to stop.
Eventually, the only logical way to end the evening and force myself back to the cabin was by jumping fully clothed into the ship’s pool.
As all sophisticated birthdays should end.
Day 6 – Final Sea Day
The final sea day arrived far too quickly.
We started with brunch at Razzle Dazzle before heading off to meet the Captain and enjoy a bridge tour. Learning how everything operates onboard was fascinating,g and yes, I absolutely took the opportunity to sit in the Captain’s chair because self-control had long since left the building.
By now, we’d completely settled into cruise life.
The rest of the day was spent soaking up every final moment onboard. Coffee in the hammock, endless ocean views drifting past, and one final wander around the ship appreciating all the little details that make Virgin Voyages feel genuinely special. I was still discovering places I hadn’t seen before.
Dinner at Test Kitchen that evening was one of the most unique dining experiences on board. Experimental, beautifully presented and just mysterious enough to make you pretend you fully understand flavour profiles.
Day 7 – Bimini Beach Club
Our final stop was Bimini in the Bahamas,s and honestly, it was the perfect ending.
We had access to Virgin’s private Beach Club at Bimini and by this point had become fully accustomed to being treated like mildly famous people.
White sands. Turquoise water. DJs. Cocktails. Everyone is fully committed to squeezing every final drop out of holiday mode.
The afternoon beach party delivered exactly the kind of chaotic sunshine energy you want before reality inevitably returns.
We drifted between the beach, pool and cocktails before heading back onboard for one final dinner at The Wake, ending the cruise exactly where it began.
Final Day – One Last Taste of Miami
After disembarking back in Miami at 6:30 am, the trip somehow still wasn’t over.
We headed to The Goodtime Hotel for breakfast and immediately understood why it’s become such an iconic Miami spot. Bright pastel interiors, relaxed luxury vibes and the perfect blend of retro glamour and South Beach cool.
We were treated to a full tour of the hotel and rooms, which honestly looked like something straight out of a magazine shoot. Stylish, playful and unapologetically Miami.
After another hosted lunch at Grand Beach Hotel with views across South Beach that genuinely looked unreal, we spent our final hours strolling along Miami Beach,h soaking up the sunshine one last time. Palm trees, roller skaters, music drifting through the air and that unmistakable South Beach atmosphere that somehow feels permanently on holiday.
To finish the trip, we jumped on board a Miami speedboat tour racing around the coastline past celebrity mansions and skyline views, with enough sea spray to destroy any attempt at controlling our hair. We also caught one final glimpse of Resilient Lady preparing to sail again with a whole new crowd on board.
Then came our final stop. Wynwood Walls.
Colour everywhere. Giant murals, street art, hidden corners and creative energy bursting from every wall. The perfect final chapter to a trip that somehow balanced luxury, adventure, relaxation and absolute chaos in equal measure.
Finally, it was time for the evening flight back to Heathrow.
Exhausted, slightly sunburnt, emotionally attached to a cruise ship hammock and already planning the next one.
