Palazzo Barocco
Introduction
Palazzo Barocco
Exotic, sumptuous, this house was originally built by prosperous merchants trading with the East and in more recent times has been a retreat for artists and writers such as Picasso and Steinbeck. Built high above Positano, surrounded by hanging gardens, the views from its terraces are quite spectacular and the villa is bathed in sunshine throughout the day.
Spacious and beautifully furnished rooms open out of each other like a series of ornate jewel-boxes, filled with some impressive paintings and with elegant furnishings. Most rooms open on to balconies or terraces, one of which forms the elegant setting for outdoor dining. The bedroom suites on the first floor are simply magnificent The Alfonso suite has beautiful frescoed ceilings dating from the eighteenth century, a private bathroom decorated with antique tiles and stone sink, two balconies, and access to a wonderful terrace with a view over Positano’s beach. The Isabella suite is decorated in keeping with the villa’s overall Baroque style, with frescoed ceilings and a private bathroom decorated with antique majolica tiles. The terrace overlooks the sea and the Chiesa Madre. Frrom these two suites, a staircase leads to the second floor. Just before the second floor level, there is a compact and comfortable single bedroom more suitable for young guests with a private shower room a few steps further up the staircase. A few further steps lead to the second floor with two further suites. From the Praiano Suite, there are views as far as Praiano and across the Mediterranean horizon. The Positano suite is a romantic ensuite room tucked under wooden eaves with a large window overlooking Positano and access to the gardens, with orange, lemon trees and flowering bougainvillea. Other superb facilities include a magnificent full-sized indoor pool with spa area, sauna and steam room. The superb kitchen has beautiful local tiles, stone arches and a wood oven.
A chef (available on request) can demonstrate how to prepare local dishes from the Amalfi Coast. For those who are passionate about cooking, more comprehensive cooking courses are also available, where guests can learn how to prepare a number of local specialties.
The villa extends over five levels, with the gardens at the highest level. The property is superbly managed by the leading hotel in Positano and the concierge and villa team run the property to the very highest standard to ensure you have the most memorable holiday. A selection of experiences can be arranged including boat tours with stops at the most exclusive beach clubs and waterfront restaurants or, for those keen to sail a little farther afield, the nearby island of Capri.
