Cycling the path of the bear
Cycling the path of the bear
I wanted to keep active whilst away on my Cruise so I opted for a cycling tour offered by P&O from the port of Gijon. We drove for approximately 1 hour to Centrobtt Valles Del Oso where we were given our cycling helmets and a quick comfort break. We then drove further into the valley where we met with our bicycles and guides. Our cycling tour took us along the Senda Del Oso (bear path), we followed the former mining railway along the river and gorge for 13 miles, taking around 2 hours. We were met at road crossings to ensure the groups safety as there is some fast vehicles on those roads. The scenery was spectacular with huge mountains looming above us. My only negative was that there were very few stops and so missed photo opportunities. The way this tour was planned meant we had fun cycling mainly downhill so nothing too taxing, it would be a good excursion for people of all abilities, just be careful of the pot holes, they have them on Spanish cycle paths as well as British roads.
The Senda del Oso, or "Path of the Bear," is named for the brown bear that resides in the area. The bear, named "Moli," is part of the Bear of Asturias Foundation, which is responsible for the care and maintenance of the bear‘s enclosure. Visitors can observe the bear's movements within a fenced area next to the path, making it a unique and educational experience for those interested in wildlife conservation and nature. The fence goes right around the mountain so she has plenty of space to roam.
