Bungaraya Island Resort - a Rainforest and beach hideaway

Bungaraya Island Resort

From Rainforest to Beach, a relaxing hideaway.

Welcome to Bungaraya

A rainforest hideaway with a stunning beach

We began our visit after a long flight via Kuala Lumpur landing late into Kota Kinabalu. We chose to stay one night in the City so we could arrive fresh to Jesselton Point and catch the private transfer (can also be a shared ferry in busier periods) to Bungaraya Island. The wonderful staff took care of our luggage and walked us to the waiting lounge before catching our speedboat which took around 25 minutes ot get to the secluded resort.

We were struck by the peace, the only sounds being the birds, monkeys, and monitor lizards as we walked along the jetty to be greeted by a waiting buggy and a briefing by the Hotel manager on the resort.

The pool area is very tranquil (in low season), but in high season, you'll perhaps find it quite busy, although not finding a sunbed to laze on is soon rectified as there are plenty on the beach. The staff will happily bring drinks to your sunbed, and we waited there for an hour until our rooms were ready, enjoying the hot sun and watching the cheeky monkeys try and bypass the staff and stuffed tigers to grab some discarded fruit.

This resort is perfect for couples looking for a few days out of the hustle and bustle of Kota Kinabalu and somewhere to decompress and take in nature. The view alone from the Beach, Pool and restaurant will captivate you, and if you're by the beach early enough, you'll see the water buffalo grooming the sand to displace the sandflies and their eggs.

Your accomodation

Choose Rainforest or Beach

We stayed in a Rainforest villa on a very steep track, which you can be taken to via buggy or brave the leg work out.
The villa was very quiet and well equipped, with all you need to relax, including insect repellents and a burner to help at dusk. You even have blinds on the balcony to deter the monkeys as well as a TV with Netflix and other apps, and you will receive a WIFI dongle so you can access the TV and use it around the resort.
Beds are large and comfortable, and there are larger rooms available right next to the beach, which can accommodate families, although I personally would not recommend this resort for young children as there is not much to do short of relaxing and enjoying the beach and a few watersports like SUP, Snorkelling and Diving.

What you need to know

This resort is perfect for anyone looking to relax and recharge but a few caveats should be mentioned ;

It would not be suitable for those with mobility issues due to the boat arrival, steep areas and access to the villas.
Small children would soon run out of things to do, and there is no easy way to get off the island once there
There are elements of the resort which are quite tired and in need of attention, but this does not detract from the charm of the place and the staff more than make up for this. Also, the area has particular challenges due to the weather, which makes it hard to keep on top of repairs, etc
The monkeys are thieves, and you must keep all rooms locked and windows closed when not there, as they will come in and steal!
The prices are quite high for Malaysia, in particular for Alcohol, as you would expect, and as you are limited ot the restaurants in the resort stays of more than 3 days, you may feel repetitive with dining options.

All that being said, the prices to stay for what you actually get are very good, and you get an incredible overall experience.
The staff are very attentive, which can be a bit unnerving if you aren't used to being watched over, but this is so they can anticipate what you require, rather than interfere.

Splitting a stay here with Gayana Marine Resort will give marine life fans the perfect Combo of Rainforest and Marine life.

You can choose to stay in your Villa and enjoy the sounds of the rainforest or chill by the beach and watch the boats in the distance.
