13 Unwritten Rules to Survive New York City!
13 Unwritten Rules to Survive New York City!
Ever wondered what it’s really like to navigate the streets of New York? 🤔
Do you know how to spot a true local from a tourist?
Before you dive head-first into the city that never sleeps, there are some unwritten rules you need to know.
We were having a laugh the other day, reminiscing about a trip to New York with Colin. 😂
We walked into this bustling popular deli, and Colin, bless him, didn’t realise he ordered at one end of the counter and was supposed to move to the other end of the counter to pick up his order.
The deli guy just looked at him, yelled, “What are you waiting for, buddy?” and tossed Colin’s sandwich roll to staff at the other end of the counter. 🥪
It was classic New York—fast, direct, and a little rough around the edges. You can't be a shrinking violet.
And it got me thinking—there are a few things you need to know before you tackle the Big Apple.
🚶 1. Walk Fast or Move Over
New Yorkers walk with purpose. If you’re taking your time, stick to the right.
Need to stop? Step aside—don’t block the flow.
🚇 2. Master the Subway
The subway is your best friend. Get to know the lines, avoid peak hours, and always stand clear of the closing doors.
📸 3. Perfect Photo Op? Don’t Block the Pavement
New York is photogenic, but don’t stop dead in the middle of a busy pavement for a shot.
Move to the side first.
🚦 4. Jaywalking is a Thing
Jaywalking is practically a sport in New York. If the coast is clear, most locals won’t wait for the light.
But stay alert—drivers are just as impatient.
💸 5. Tip Generously
Tipping isn’t optional. In restaurants, 18-20% is standard.
Don’t forget to tip bartenders, taxi drivers, and hotel staff.
🚫 6. Avoid Empty Subway Cars
If a subway car is empty during rush hour, there’s usually a reason—like a broken air conditioner or a bad smell.
Follow the crowd instead.
🎒 7. Keep Your Bag Close
New York is generally safe, but pickpockets do exist, especially in crowded areas.
Keep your bag close and your belongings secure.
🚕 8. Learn How to Hail a Cab
Look for a cab with its roof light on—this means it’s available. Stand on the edge of the pavement, raise your arm, and make eye contact.
🏙 9. Visit Times Square, Then Move On
Times Square is a must-see, but it’s also a tourist trap. Take in the lights, snap some pics, and then explore the real New York beyond the billboards.
Beware of the fancy dressed Marvel Figures or other characters, you will need to pay for a photo with them.
🗣 10. Small Talk is Short
New Yorkers aren’t unfriendly, just efficient. Small talk is brief and to the point, so don’t be offended if conversations end quickly.
⏰ 11. Plan Around the Crowds
New York never sleeps, but it does get crowded. Visit major attractions early in the morning or late in the evening to beat the rush.
☕️ 12. Coffee is Life
Coffee isn’t a luxury in New York—it’s fuel. Whether from an artisanal café or a street vendor, it’s essential. When in doubt, order a “regular” (milk and sugar included).
🌍 13. Embrace the Diversity
New York is one of the most diverse cities in the world. Dive into different neighbourhoods, try new foods, and meet people from all walks of life. That’s what makes this city special.
🎯 Ready to Tackle NYC?
New York is a city like no other. By following these unwritten rules, you’ll navigate it like a pro and truly experience everything the Big Apple has to offer.
