Kefalonia - a beautiful Greek Island

greece_1 Kefalonia is the largest Ionian island, next to Corfu and Zakynthos. It has breathtaking scenery, lush forest and dizzyingly high mountains. Not forgetting the crystal clear waters, stunning beaches - visitors will not be disappointed. Kefalonia is a relaxed island with lots of places to visit - Melassani Lake - a beautiful under ground lake where you can explore on a boat . The famous Myrtos beach with stunning wite sand and pebble beach where the colour of the sea changed daily. Take a trip to the little island of Ithaca, the birthplace of Odysseus. There is now a 'proper' road to the top of Mount Ainos, the third highest mountain in Greece, where you can visit the National Park, this is a complete contrast to the beach. Resorts to stay in Lassi, with gorgeous sandy beaches, lively bars and close the the capital Argostoli where you can shop, sit in the square with coffee and cake and watch the world go by. Go turtle spotting and this a Monk Seal has been seen regularly. From the bustling port take a ferry over to Lixouri, the second largest town in Kefalonia, this is home to the new waterpark that is open to the public and is 5 euros a day. Skala, set on a long golden beach and one of the most popular resorts on the island, it has an excellent selection of tavernas and bars. Kefalonia is home to a few local wineries, St Gerasimos and Gentillini that you can explore and also hosts the islands famous Robolla wine. There is a good variety of tavernas ranging from fast food where you can sample a 'Gyros' to top class restaurants. Tavernas off the beaten track can be found and are not to be missed! Kefalonia is filled with history - little villages abandoned in the hillside, it has Hollywood connections with Captain Corellis Mandolin - and a popular destination for the discerning traveller.
