Skiing with Children

Family ski holiday tips

What I learnt from taking my kids skiing for the first time

Family ski holidays have always been something I dreamed of since having children. Pre-kids, my husband and I frequently took ski holidays to the Alps (he’s a boarder) but we felt there were a few barriers that were in the way of booking our first family ski holiday.

The cost - how can a ski holiday ever be budget-friendly with lessons, ski hire, lift passes?

The practicalities - after investing into this big holiday, how will I know if the kids will enjoy it? Will they get cold? Will they not pick up skiing? Will they moan about having to carry their own equipment?

This winter I decided we had waited long enough for our first family ski holiday! Our girls were going to be 11 and 8 and I didn’t want my eldest to get to the age that the fear of learning might kicking. So we took the plunge and booked our first family ski holiday to Austria.

I wanted to share our experience - I hope others will find it useful when planning their first holiday skiing with children - here are my top tips:

1, There's no right or wrong age for kids to start

There’s no sweet spot for when is the right age but this age worked perfectly. My girls are 11 and 8 and there was no moaning about cold, tiredness or carrying equipment.

2, Children don't seem to have the same fear as adults when learning!

There’s not the fear you may have as an adult when skiing for the first time. They just get on with it.

3, Children are fast learners

They picked it up quickly… they went for zero to skiing down reds faster than me by the end of the week. Also, credit to the quality Ski School Wildschoneau who were excellent!

4, Private Lessons were great, giving us much more time to ski as a family

Now everyone is different when it comes to lessons but we decided we didn’t want to put them in ski school all week because we wanted to get a chance to ski with them. Instead they did private lessons of two 3 hour mornings. This was enough for them to learn the ropes and ski with us for the rest of the holiday. It also meant we weren’t chained to early ski school starts every day!

5. Opt for accommodation with dinner included

Staying in a hotel with half board meant there was zero stress at dinner time in finding a restaurant. You just walked down to dinner in your comfy clothes and don't have to head back out in the cold.

6. Choose a hotel that is close to the slopes

Choose a hotel that is easily accessible to the slopes. Our hotel was about a 3 minute walk, which was do-able carrying skis every morning. And don’t make a rod for your own back by offering to carry their skis. They’ll get used to it and expect it.

7. Choose a hotel with a pool (and a spa)

Finding a hotel with a pool is a bonus. After a long day skiing, the girls loved unwinding in the pool. An even bigger bonus is finding a hotel with a good spa, so that the adults get to unwind too!

More information on my ski holiday to Austria

We stayed at the Hotel Sonnschein in Niederau in Austria. A quaint Austrian village in the mountains which has excellent nursery slopes, perfect for children learning to ski. The ski school was excellent and good value too. The fact that after 6 hours of private lessons, my kids were skiing down the mountain with us, speaks volumes for the quality of tuition (in my opinion).
