Syracuse (Siracusa) Sicily

If you are holidaying in Sicily, the lovely city of Syracuse, situated on the south east coast of Sicily, is well worth a look. Steeped in Greek and Roman history and in the most lovely setting, Syracuse was founded in 733 BC and is a destination of two halves...you can split your visit between the plethora of archaeological sites and the beautiful island of Ortygia, easily reached by crossing the bridge. So firstly, not least because my husband is an ardent Time Team fan, we visited the historical sites...there are so many - a 3rd century Roman amphitheatre, The Necropolis of Pantalica with over 5,000 tombs cut into the rock, and the foundations of the Anaktoron (Prince’s Palace) are amongst them. Probably the most striking monument for us was the 5th century Greek amphitheatre, reputably one of the largest ever built. Its 59 rows of 'seats' could hold 15,000 spectators. It is wonderful to know that this site is still used today as a venue for the Greek Festival Theatre, which runs each year from mid-May till the end of June. Sadly we missed that opportunity, but my guess is it would be awesome! And then we walked on into the lovely area of Ortygia, also packed with history. With buildings encompassing, Greek, Roman, Medieval Norman, and Baroque architecture it is simply stunning! You now have three choices of direction... Do you turn right for history and the beautiful Arethusa fountain? Or do you turn left a find yourself in the colourful daily market and the scrumptious delicatessens? (my favourite) You may choose to go straight on, passing the 7th century Temple of Apollo, past the the Piazza Archimede, named after Syracuse's famous son, and on into the lovely pedestrian square, the Piazza del Duomo, the home of the magnificent cathedral, which has incorporated the remains of the original 4th century Greek cathedral. This is but a snapshot of a truly lovely city. We did Syracuse in a day, but it is deserving of a longer stay if you have the time. (there are lots of accommodation options) We certainly hope to revisit it again one day...there is such a lot still to see.
