La Pirogue – Flic en Flac, West Coast Mauritius

One of the original hotels built on the island, described as ‘An Oasis of Coolness’

Modelled on a fishing village. La Pirogue is a relaxed retreat set on an excellent beach.

Rooms & Suites

All of the hotel’s guestrooms open privately onto the Palm Grove which leads directly to the sandy beach and sea. Each ‘rustic’ unit or cottage either has one bedroom or two bedrooms depending on the grade of accommodation. The roofs of the cottages are wood and thatched and the solid walls are made of volcanic rock. Bright colours are used for soft furnishings in the rooms. Although the rooms are compact and a odd shape, they are perfectly adequate for a 4 star property.  Clients return regularly to this hotel enjoying the enviable sheltered position on the island. Guests are free to enjoy the facilities of this property and of the higher grade Sugar Beach next door, which means they receive super value.

Standard Rooms (25 sq m) – 2 separate rooms within the one main Cottage Building. An extra bed can be added in each room for a child up to 12 yrs.

Two rooms can be booked side by side which is ideal families, (34 are communicating while 166 are not). The ones that don’t communicate with one another are super for teenagers who wish to have some independence but with parents close by.

Superior Rooms (35 sq m) – Cottage building of its own and are slightly larger.

This room type can accommodate two children up to 12 years or one adult – although two standard rooms adjoining are far more satisfactory.

All the usual facilities including wall safes, Flat Screen TV and Sat TV (payable) Internet, separate bath and showers and tea making facilities.

There are a couple of larger suites, the Royal Suite Flamboyant and the Royal Suite Bougainvillea but you would have to question if clients spending this extra amount would wish to stay at a 4 star property – however I was informed that there is demand.

Restaurants & Bars

‘The Thatches’ is the main large dining area with a beautiful ‘tropical feel’ setting. Buffet meals with a large selection of both hot and cold dishes are served for breakfast, lunch and dinner. A themed dinner menu is usually in operation on a 14 day cycle. The buffet area was quite busy when we dined there, however The Paul & Virginie Restaurant was closed (it closes once a week) that evening and the hotel was full.

The Paul & Virginie Restaurant (a la carte in evening) offer at table dining with diners seated in several pavilions around and some overhanging the wonderful pavilion pool overlooking the ocean and beach. This venue offers a romantic and more intimate dining experience and is normally open for lunches and dinner. I ate there at for lunch and the meal was wonderful.

Days of operation of each restaurant may vary so please ask for further details. The hotel shares facilities with the 5 star Sugar Beach next door so look at that report please for more information on places to dine etc.

The Blue Bar, Coconut Cafe, and Beach Bar offer  large selection of cocktails, drinks and espressos. Snack lunch can be taken at the Coconut Cafe.

Half Board, All Inclusive and Dining in Sun Resort Hotels in Mauritius.

Most of the Mauritian Sun Resorts offer a choice of half board and an all inclusive option. The all inclusive option normally includes most drinks and the opportunity of dining in all restaurants including the a la carte ones (with only some of the selections carrying a supplement) whereas the half board offer is more restrictive and you may only receive a credit to dine a la carte. Each property could be slightly different and of course all arrangements are reviewed from time to time so it is wise to look at the options in detail and see what exactly they include before booking. It is also wise to check (if all inclusive) if there is a time deadline in the evening when this facility ceases for alcoholic drinks. The Le Touessrok does not offer an all inclusive option.
