Every month of the year offers something different in Cairns. Whilst the summer is hot and wet the waterfalls are in full splendour and the rainforest is amazing, everything is so green. The bird life is also spectacular.
Winter offers mild temperatures and probably is the most popular time to visit.

Flight Over Heart Reef
What a spectacular way to appreciate the wonders of the Great Barrier Reef than by air. You can take a scenic flight by sea plane over Heart Reef or fly over Whitehaven Bay on Whitsunday Island.
Diving and Snorkelling
Another way to see the reef is from under the waves! There are no less than 5000 dive spots along the coastline depending on your experience. Two of the most popular sites are Cairns Reefs and The Ribbon Reefs. Cairns Reefs are teeming with wildlife, including thousands of fish, turtles and humpback whales. Its excellent for first time divers and families with children.
Cairns is an excellent place to base yourself if you want to explore the northern half of Queensland and is the closest mainland access to the Great Barrier Reef. The town offers a fantastic range of accommodation from budget hostels to luxury 5 star hotels. There are also fabulous restaurants and plenty of shopping opportunities.
