Zimbabwe with African Pride

Zimbabwe with African Pride

Sitting beside a plunge pool that overlooks a vast plain in the heart of the Hwange National Park, gin & tonic in hand, it is hard to believe that you are in Zimbabwe , a country that in recent years has dominated the news for all the wrong reasons. But tourism here is bouncing back, it is a beautiful country - before the troubles it was one of Africa's biggest sellers. Tourists may be concerned, but the money spent here doesn't go to line the government pockets: it goes to local Zimbabweans who are very dependent on tourism. All of the lodges and hotels that African Pride recommend, employ local people and most contribute to the community welfare by investing in schools and medical projects etc. Zimbabwe is blessed with more than its fair share of truly stunning scenery, excellent game viewing, fine accommodation and warm friendly people. You fly into Bulawayo, via Johannesburg, your first night can be spent in the beautiful Matobo National Park which is famous for its huge piles of red tinged granite boulders, plus the exceptionally well preserved rock paintings which date back over 2000 years. The Hwange National Park is 3 hours drive from Bulawayo, it is the largest game reserve in Zimbabwe. It is home to huge herds of elephants as well as buffalo, lion, leopard, zebra, giraffe and wild dogs. There are over 430 species of birds, a photographers dream come true! No visit to Zimbabwe would be complete without a visit to the magnificent Victoria Falls. A curtain of water which is 1 mile wide, plunging 300 feet into the gorge below, a truly unforgettable sight. The site around the falls has been left relatively untouched. You can wander cobbled pathways through the rainforest to the edge of the falls. The greatest flow of water is in April/May, with the least in October/November. But a visit anytime will be spectacular. Lake Kariba is a huge man made lake in the North-West with excellent game viewing opportunities plus superb fishing. To the South of Kariba is Matusadona National Park which offers walking safaris. Mana Pools is a World Heritage Site along the banks of the mighty Zambezi River. This area is a haven for game and wildlife.
