Mention of Tenerife often conjures up thoughts of overcrowded resorts like Playa de las Americas, and people sometimes look no further. It is, however, one of the most pleasant of the Canary Islands.
When my wife and I visited various hotels in the North and South Tenerife plus la Gomera, our favourite place was definitely the North despite the weather sometimes being slightly cloudy in an afternoon and there being more rain than the south.
The north has managed to retain some of its original character. The Loro Parque is situated here, where you can see the world’s largest collection of parrots and it also offers other adventures. The bustling capital, the port of Santa Cruz is charming, with good shops and museums and many of the streets pedestrianised. About half an hour along the scenic North West coast is Garachico, a quaint little volcanic resort dating from 1496. Don’t miss the beautiful Orotava Valley and Orotava town which has lovely, preserved Canarian architecture.
Where to go in the South
For sun worshippers or for a twin centre holiday, Costa Adeje, located in the southwest of the island, offers guests a range of hotels of very high quality, many set in their own lush gardens. As well as 5-star properties, there are some very good value 4-star choices suitable for children (and adults) with good appetites.
Twin Centre Holidays and Advice
Hotels in north Tenerife range from the luxurious Hotel Botanico in the beautiful elevated area of ‘La Paz’, above Puerto de la Cruz, to the unique, smaller hotels at Garachico. Two-centre, or even three-centre holidays can be arranged, beginning in the north and travelling to the south, or including the island of La Gomera. All transfers can be pre-booked and easily arranged.
There are other luxurious resorts out with the main areas, but clients should be careful to make the correct choice to suit what is expected of their holiday. Ask me for further details. See separate blog post on La Gomera.
