Sweden’s capital and the cultural capital hub of the Baltic. Most of the city has a feel of openness (apart from the old Town) including the vast Djurgarden and the nearby island of Skeppsholem with its lovely waterfront. The port is only about 10 minutes by shuttle bus to the centre.

The Gamla Stan (Old Town) is located on the original small islands of the city’s earliest settlements. It retains the original medieval layout with narrow cobbled streets and attractive individual shops. I would suggest ‘window’ shopping as things are twice what we would pay in the UK. Expect to pay at least £12 for a couple of coffees and one cake. Probably one of the main attractions of Stockholm, apart from being a very clean city, is that it has retained its sophistication and is not full of budget travellers and stag party trips. One of the best ports to stay before a cruise; you could just about afford 2 nights.

Places to visit

The Gamla Stan (Old Town) including Tyska Kyran (German Church) and several mansions and churches – The Royal Palace (close by) – City Hall (Nobel prize organisation, also close by) – Skeppsholmen (Island) – Djutgarden (Park) – National Museum – Museum of National Art – Vasa Museum (The Vasa warship was raised from Stockholm Harbour in 1961, 333 years after her ill-fated maiden voyage in 1628) – Various boat trips. The Ericsson Globe (globearenas.se) is Stockholm’s answer to London’s O2 Dome; visitors can ride to the top in a glass gondola which travels up the outside of the sphere. Don’t miss the World’s first permanent ice bar (Absolut Ice Bar) – cocktails are served in glasses made of ice.

Stieg Larsson Tours

While visiting Stockholm you can now step into the crime underworld. Stieg Larsson’s published Trilogy (The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo) became best sellers seven years after his sudden tragic death, with more than 50 million copies sold. You can participate in a Self-Guided Tour or a 2 hour Guided Tour booked through City Museum. Tourists have been flocking to the city to retrace Larsson’s storylines on these tours.
