I have recently had an update from one of my many travel contacts who partly lives in Sri Lanka and who owns the delightful Estate House there and helps Designer Travel arrange fantastic tailor-made holidays to this region.

The undeveloped East of the country – great for our Summer School Holidays and Honeymooners in Spring, Summer and Autumn.

The east coast of the island has been rediscovered and its climate (different from the west) is ideal for a super value summer beach holiday. New resorts such as Passekudah Bay have been thoughtfully developed. Safe swimming, dolphins, whales and amazing dive sites make this a wonderful destination and can easily be combined with a private tour of wildlife and other attractions on the island. In my opinion the best beaches I have seen in Sri Lanka; great for family school holidays and honeymoons April to November.

New Hotels and others upgraded in the West – extension of the Southern Expressway.

New hotels continue to open and existing hotels have been upgraded. Shinagawa just north of Hikkaduwa is a new boutique property and great value for money, whilst the old favorites such as the Taj in Bentota has been renovated and is great for families. The Southern expressway has now been extended to Matara & and half the Colombo ring road has opened, cutting journey times to the south.

 Great Opportunity for Cricket Lovers

Cricket is a religion in Sri Lanka. England choose Sri Lanka as the venue to practice for the championships in 2015.  The nation was delighted to be crowned ICC T20 champions in April 2014.

Less busy alternatives for Wildlife on the Island – Leopards and Elephants.

The national park in Yala for leopard sightings and Minneriya for the largest gathering of Wild elephants continue to pull visitors. However, we are disappointed by the lack of control of the number of jeeps and are delighted to offer two alternatives, Wilpattu and Uduwalawa. Less jeeps make for a much better authentic safari experience. National parks including Horton Plains and the cloud forest and the Singharajah rain forest add to the nature experiences on offer.

Kite Surfing – Surfing the Waves – White Water Rafting

Thrill seekers are attracted to Kalpitiya on the North West coast which has been voted one of the world’s best destination_blogs for kite surfing. Arugam bay in the South east best for surfing the waves and Kithulgalla for white water rafting.

The national drink of Sri Lanka?

And finally TEA. A past guest from the Rosyth Estate House has just ordered 10 kgs of Rosyth tea for shipping to the UK. They left in February with 4 kgs and are now addicted. We look forward to welcoming our travel friends (and their clients) to the Rosyth Estate House for an authentic Sri Lankan estate and gourmet experience. www.rosyth.lk

I hope this little update will inspire you to visit Sri Lanka…please do not hesitate to contact me for further information and ideas.
