CRUISE with Norwegian Cruise Line
Norwegian Cruise Line was an early pioneer of the fly-cruise market, offering a more relaxed type of cruise. It was the first line to introduce the Internet for clients’ use on their ships, and introduced the very popular freestyle dining which many lines have copied to some degree.
With a modern fleet of around fifteen ships, NCL caters well for families and has added amenities like interconnecting cabins and suites, bowling alleys and electronic restaurant reservations. Most of their ships are around 90,000 tons carrying around 2400 guests and 1000 crew, with a couple around 77,000 tons carrying 2000 guests and 950 crew.
All ships have multiple dining venues; the main dining room and at least one other carrying no extra charge. There are a good selection of speciality alternatives including Asian Fusion, Steakhouses, French Bistros and Sushi Bars. The new ‘Epic’ offers 11 complimentary dining options out of 21 in total that is included in the cruise fare.
Norwegian Cruise Line caters well for children and teenagers with an abundance of ‘child friendly’ amenities and programmes on board. Their Kids and Teens Crew Clubs are split into four different age groups. Norwegian Cruise Line has introduced Garden and Courtyard Villas with exclusive deck space on its new ships, catering for those who are prepared to pay for privacy and space, and also very suitable for larger family groups.
The new Epic
During 2010, the F3 project saw the introduction of a super-liner, the 153,000 ton Norwegian Epic, carrying 4200 guest and 1730 crew, with a few novel ideas, such as ‘wave’ design cabins, with curved walls and fittings, the largest luxury suite complex at sea, and spa and family friendly cabins. There was also dedicated accommodation for the solo traveller and an Ice Bar with colours simulating the Northern Lights. The POSH Beach Club is available to adults on purchase of a pass, accessed by private elevator to an outdoor complex. There is an adult-only two deck complex offering a huge LED screen during the day and an Ibiza-style club in the evening. Guests will be given the option of buying a Club Package, allowing access to a range of clubs and entertainment venues
There are 13 entertainment venues and many are bookable before you sail. There is the first ‘big top’ at sea, the Spiegel Tent, home to Cirque Dreams and Dinner. Nickelodeon at sea offers family entertainment including ‘meet and greets’. The Howl at the Moon is a rock’n roll duelling piano show with audience participation. Tribute show, Legends in Concert, are featured as well as the blockbuster stage ‘Blue Man Group’.
A Further Generation of New Ships
Following the successful launch of Norwegian Epic, Norwegian Cruise Line continues to modernise its fleet with the arrival of four Breakaway class ships – Breakaway, Getaway, Escape and Bliss in 2013, 2014, 2015 and 2017 respectively. Two more ships have been ordered for 2018 and 2019.
The ships include an open-air boardwalk lined with shops, restaurants, and bars. There are numerous restaurant options spanning three decks which will include al fresco dining, bars and entertainment, and a new gelato bar. There are a total of nearly 30 dining options onboard including many outdoor dining options on the Waterfront. The ships also have exclusive studios for solo travellers with their own exclusive lounge.
There are a mix of stateroom options on these ships including The Haven by Norwegian comprising several exclusive suites and villas at the top of the ship where you have the option of using its own private dining room for breakfast and lunch and many other exclusive facilities and privileges are provided.
Norwegian Joy being introduced summer 2017 and built exclusively for the Chinese market will include an observation deck offering 180degree views, new ‘VIP experience’ accommodation with its own lounge, restaurants and private bar. It will also feature the first racetrack at sea including hovercraft bumper cars and Star wars ‘battlepods’!
