Christ the Redeemer!

Christ the Redeemer!

The World Cup will come and go but the phenomenal, iconic statue of Christ the Redeemer will surely stand forever!... Built between 1922 and 1931, this amazing Art Deco style monument, stands atop the Corcovado mountain, looking over and reaching out to the city of Rio de Janeiro beneath. Created in reinforced concrete with outer layers of soapstone, formed as a mosaic of thousands of triangular tiles, this amazing feat of engineering is over 30 metres tall, sits on a pedestal 8 meters high and the arms stretch out over 28 metres. It is truly overwhelming to stand alongside. Christ the Redeemer was built as a symbol of peace and was declared one of the New Seven Wonders of the World in 2007. Naturally thousands of tourists flock to witness it, and it can be crowded at the top of Corcovado at times, but don't let that put you off, it is truly a sight worth seeing. Its best to pick a clear day if you can because the panoramic views from the top of the 700 metre high mountain are breathtaking. Sugar Loaf mountain with its crazy cable-car, the gorgeous beaches, the vibrant and sprawling city, all laid out before you - magical! Access to the statue is between 8 am and 7 pm and can be reached by mountain road minibus/taxi or electric train. We went on the latter - the trains run frequently and take about 20 minutes to reach the summit. Currently it costs around £ 12 for an adult ticket. I am pleased to say that once off the train, escalators, installed in 2002, have provided an alternative to climbing the 220 steps to the pedestal of the statue! There is also a little chapel housed inside the pedestal. I really don't think it matters whether you have a religious faith or not, Christ the Redeemer has a universal appeal, and is absolutely worth seeing. It has a great back-story of how it came into being and how it was built, and it has come to mean a great deal to many people who have visited it from all over the world. I think Christ the Redeemer is awesome, I shall remember it always. It was the highlight of my trip to Rio, and I hope it will be yours too!
